juniata valley big brothers big sisters
“I like hanging out with my Big Brother. Sometimes we talk about what’s going on in my neighborhood or at school. He’s good at football and is teaching me how to throw like a quarterback!”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mifflin/Juniata Counties operates under the premise that one caring adult can make a significant difference in the life of a child. To that end, the program is committed to creating positive friendships that benefit children, volunteers, families, neighborhoods, and the community! Think back on your own childhood. Who was that special person who brought a little magic into your life?
Big Brothers Big Sisters places children in one-on-one mentoring relationships that center on doing activities together. Volunteers meet with their Littles once a week for at least an hour and must make a 9 to 12 month committment. During their meeting times, Bigs and Littles spend time doing fun activities such as playing at the park, going to the library, or just hanging out and talking.
National research reveals that Littles are more likely to show positive behaviors in school and at home than children not matched with a Big. Our matches are effective because professional staff ensure that the relationships are safe and rewarding for everyone involved. In fact, Bigs consistently say they get even more out of being matched than their Littles!
Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters were:
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol.
- 52% less likely to skip school.
- 37% less likely to skip a class.
- More confident of their performance in schoolwork.
- One-third less likely to hit someone.
- Getting along better with their families.
